The SHAKER range: timeless, done properly

Our SHAKER range brings the classic framed shaker door into a contemporary palette. Clean lines, a defined frame, and a choice of finishes (including the popular Dust Grey and Cashmere) let it sit just as happily in a period cottage as in a new build. Add your choice of handles (the black bar handles above are a current favourite, or go handleless for a softer look), and it becomes genuinely yours.

Built to last: the doors and hinges

A hinged door only feels premium if it still closes smoothly in five years, so the hinges matter as much as the finish. Every hinged wardrobe we build uses concealed hinges that are sized to the door in front of them: a tall shaker door or a heavier mirror door simply gets more hinges, set correctly for its weight, rather than the same hardware being used regardless of size.

Each door is adjusted on the day it’s fitted so the gaps are even and it closes quietly.

How much space do hinged wardrobe doors need?

The one practical question worth answering before you fall for a hinged look: a hinged door needs room to swing. As a simple rule of thumb, a door projects roughly its own width into the room when opened: a 450mm door needs about 450mm of clear floor space in front of it, a 600mm door about 600mm, and so on. That’s rarely a problem across a full wall, but it’s worth thinking about if the wardrobe will sit opposite a bed, in a narrow walkway, or close to a radiator or another door.

If space is tight in one spot, mixing narrower hinged doors with a sliding section (or going sliding altogether) often works better than forcing hinged doors where they don’t fit. We measure your exact room on the free design visit and will tell you honestly if hinged isn’t the right call for that particular wall.

Why choose hinged over sliding?

• Full access. Hinged doors open completely, so you see the whole interior at once, rather than one section staying covered while another door is open.
• Classic styling. Framed shaker doors suit traditional and period homes, and pair naturally with picture rails, cornices and a chimney breast alcove either side of a fireplace.
• Furniture to match. Easier to coordinate with freestanding-style bedroom pieces like the dressing table above.
• Best where floor space allows. You need clearance for the doors to swing (see the space guide above).

A natural fit for period and character homes

Older bedrooms rarely come as a neat rectangle. A chimney breast usually leaves an alcove on either side, walls are often slightly out of square, and there might be a picture rail or cornice to work around.

Hinged doors handle all of this well: each side of a chimney breast can be built as its own fitted section, sized to that exact alcove, rather than forcing one continuous run across an uneven wall. It’s part of why hinged and shaker styles are so at home in the West Midlands’ older housing stock, from Victorian terraces to Edwardian semis.

If your home has a sloping ceiling or eaves, hinged doors can still work, usually as part of a mixed layout: full-height hanging where the ceiling allows it, with lower drawers or shelves under the slope where a door would otherwise catch the ceiling.

It’s the interior that makes it work

Behind those shaker doors, the storage is fully bespoke: long and short hanging, drawer banks, custom shelf stacks, shoe storage and open shelf towers, all built on towers around 620mm deep for side-to-side hanging (narrower is possible with front-facing hanging bars).

What’s the difference between hinged and sliding wardrobes?

Hinged doors swing fully open on hinges, so you see the whole wardrobe interior at once. It’s the classic, traditional choice, and it suits period and character homes especially well. Sliding doors run on a track and save floor space, since nothing swings out into the room. The right choice usually comes down to how much clearance you have in front of the wardrobe; our designer talks you through both on your free home design visit.

What is a shaker wardrobe?

A shaker wardrobe has a simple, framed panel door (clean lines with no fussy detail), a style that started with Shaker furniture-makers in the 18th century and has stayed popular ever since because it suits almost any room, from a period cottage to a new build. Can hinged wardrobes be fitted into an alcove or a sloped ceiling?

Yes. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast are one of the best uses for hinged doors, since each side can be built to its own exact size.
